How Are Adjustments Performed?

There is a lot of questions surrounding the chiropractic industry and one glaring question has to do with how adjustments are performed. Unlike general practitioners that often rely on technology to perform exams and tests, chiropractors must do everything by hand. Each adjustment is performed physically as the chiropractor has a keen understanding of the bone’s alignment needs.

Certain instruments are used to assist with adjustments, but chiropractic services are primarily a physical job.

Does it Hurt?

One might think that a visit to the chiropractor would be a very painful endeavour, but it is actually the opposite. Most patients come in with pain and leave feeling better than ever before. Where the initial adjustment might be a little uncomfortable, the relief felt following the adjustment far outweighs any pain experienced for a short period of time.

Most adjustments do not hurt, so there is very little to fear about going to the chiropractor.

Will I Need Ongoing Treatment?

Sometimes, one adjustment does the trick. Patients come into the office with pain and after the adjustment, they feel better and are able to go about their regular lives. However, there are times where ongoing treatment is necessary to live a quality life.

Each person is different, but it is often recommended that a patient return to the chiropractor on a regular basis to keep pain at bay. Chronic pain patients will likely have to make regular trips to the chiropractor, but each patient is treated as an individual, so individual needs will vary.

Is the Popping Sound During an Adjustment a Bad Thing?

The sound of anything cracking on our bodies can be alarming. Initially, the popping sounds noticed during an adjustments can be frightening, but they are not actually your bones cracking as one might believe. During the adjustment, gas bubbles are released from pressure points in the joint causing the popping noise.

There is generally very little discomfort and the popping noise does not damage your body. The same type of popping noise is experienced while popping your knuckles. It is no different at the chiropractor.

Can I Keep My Clothes On?

This might sound like an odd question, but it is a valid one for those who have never been to a chiropractor. Medical doctors performing exams often ask you to remove a piece or all of your clothing for the exam.

For the chiropractor, you will rarely have to be in unclothed for the exam. There are some adjustments that may require an article of clothing to be removed, but it is unlikely you will have to remove clothing for an adjustment at the chiropractor.
